New LYC.2 trial opens for patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma

A new clinical trial has opened in Canada for patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), investigating whether an intensive treatment approach can reduce the risk of the disease returning after initial chemotherapy.

“This is a clinical trial that CCTG and other cooperative groups are uniquely positioned to undertake in order to improve the lives of patients; For-profit organizations will not do this for patients,” Dr. Neil Sun Chua, LYC2 study chair and Medical Oncologist at the Cross Cancer Institute.

The LYC.2 trial is a phase III study evaluating high-dose chemotherapy followed by an autologous stem cell transplant in patients who have achieved a complete response to their first-line chemotherapy treatment. Peripheral T-cell lymphoma is a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. While many patients initially respond to treatment, the disease can return, creating a need for strategies that improve long-term outcomes.

“Across Canada, both approaches following a complete response to Induction therapy are used – observation or an autologous stem cell transplant,” says Dr. Lois Shepherd, CCTG Senior Investigator. “This makes the trial question ideal to ask in the Canadian environment.”

Researchers will compare the current approach of observation alone with high-dose chemotherapy followed by reinfusion of the patient's own stem cells. The study aims to determine whether this treatment strategy can help prevent lymphoma recurrence and improve patient outcomes.

“I believe this trial will help give patients more confidence in the treatment options being offered to them,” says Tracy Kitz, CCTG Patient Representative. “Having a stem cell transplant is a burden and we need to know if it’s truly needed to improve outcomes.”
