CCS Listing of Top 10 Cancer Stories of 2012
|The results of two Canadian Cancer Trials Group-related clinical trials were included in the Canadian Cancer Society's listing of the top 10 cancer stories of 2012.
The trials include:
Canadian Cancer Trials Group PA.2 (ESPAC-3) - Phase III Adjuvant Trial in Pancreatic Cancer Comparing (1) 5FU and D-L Folinic Acid vs (2) Gemcitabine vs (3) No Adjuvant Treatment
"Improving survival for patients with rare form of pancreatic cancer"
An Canadian Cancer Trials Group study found that patients with a rare form of pancreatic cancer - periampullary adenocarcinoma - live longer if they are treated with surgery plus chemotherapy. This finding is an important step towards improving typically poor survival rates for pancreatic cancer patients.
Canadian Cancer Trials Group HD.6 - A Phase III Study of Radiotherapy or ABVD plus Radiotherapy versus ABVD Alone in the Treatment of Early Stage Hodgkin's Disease
"Trial finds Hodgkin lymphoma patients live longer with chemotherapy alone"
A trial led by the Canadian Cancer Trials Group found that patients with limited-stage Hodgkin lymphoma live longer when treated with standard chemotherapy compared with those also receiving radiation. The findings mean that these patients can be effectively treated for their cancer while avoiding the long-term side effects of radiation.
