Dr. Tony Fields Named to the Order of Canada

Tony Fields The Canadian Cancer Trials Group is extremely pleased to announce that Dr. Tony Fields, long-time member of the Group, has been named to the Order of Canada which recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

In its official release, the Office of the Governor-General acknowledges Tony's contributions to cancer treatment, diagnosis and research in Alberta as a professor and administrator.

Since 2009, Tony has been a member of the Canadian Cancer Trials Group's senior advisory committee, the Clinical Trials Committee, and was Chair of the Group's Gastrointestinal Site Committee. Although he's recently retired, he continues to teach part-time at the University of Alberta and works half a day a week on the medical staff at the Cross Cancer Institute, in Edmonton.

Tony is also Chair of the Pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review Expert Review Committee whose mandate is to to make cancer drug funding recommendations to participating provincial/territorial Ministries of Health and provincial cancer agencies to help guide their cancer drug funding decisions. The Committee's recommendations consider the evidence-based reviews of the clinical effectiveness and cost effectiveness of cancer drug products, as well as the input provided by patient advocacy groups and jurisdictions.

The Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian awards, was established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is the centrepiece of Canada's honours system.
