Maria Ricci Memorial Lectureship in Medical Oncology

Dr. Karen Gelmon is the inaugural speaker for the Maria Ricci Memorial Lectureship in Medical Oncology being held 13 November 2008 at the Cancer Research Institute, Queen's University. The title of Dr. Gelmon's talk is "The Hit and Miss of Targeted Therapy for Breast Cancer".

The Maria Ricci Memorial Lectureship in Medical Oncology was established in 2007 with funding provided by GlaxoSmithKline Inc. in memory of Maria Ricci. The proceeds of this endowment are to be used to support a lectureship at the Canadian Cancer Trials Group in the area of medical oncology.

Dr. Gelmon is a Professor of Medicine at the UBC and a Medical Oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency, combining clinical and translational research. She is Co Chair of the Canadian Cancer Trials Group (Canadian Cancer Trials Group) Breast Site Committee and a member of The Breast Cancer Intergroup Committee (TBCI, formerly the North American Breast Intergroup) and of the Breast International Group (BIG). She is past Chair of the Investigational New Drug Committee of the Canadian Cancer Trials Group and sits on that committee┐s executive. She was Chair of the BC Provincial Breast Tumour Group which oversees guidelines and care for the entire province. She is Clinical leader of Advanced Therapeutics department of the BCCA. She sits on the International Advisory Board of The Lancet, The Lancet Oncology and Clinical Breast Cancer. She is a reviewer for numerous journals and grant panels, has been track chair for Breast Site at ASCO and is an active teacher interested in education of health care professionals and the public. As well, she sits on the Board of the BC Cancer Foundation and on the Medical Advisory Board of the BC/Yukon Chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. She was the recipient of a YWCA Woman of Distinction award in 2003.
